Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime

 

Sadiya Umar Farouq, the Honourable Federal Commissioner, NCFRMI attended the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime: Working groups on trafficking in persons and smuggling of Migrants, in Vienna, Austria. In conformance to article 32 of the United Nations Convention against Transnational organized Crime, a Conference of the Parties to the Convention was created to enhance the capacity of States Parties to combat transnational organized crime and to advance and re-evaluate the implementation of the Convention.

 

For the Working Group on Trafficking in Persons, topics discussed include “International cooperation in cases of trafficking in persons: considering the needs and rights of victims. Background paper prepared by the Secretariat” and a “Non-paper containing a draft questionnaire for the review of the implementation of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime”. While the Working Group on Smuggling of Migrants touched on “Criminal justice responses, including international cooperation, in investigations and prosecutions of perpetrators of migrant smuggling operations. Background Paper by the Secretariat” and a “Non-paper containing a draft questionnaire for the review of the implementation of the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime”. Both groups are constant elements of the Conference.
