Ending Statelessness

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) is at the forefront of efforts to address and end statelessness in Nigeria. Statelessness, which leaves individuals without nationality and access to fundamental rights, poses significant challenges to social inclusion, economic opportunities, and human dignity.

Through strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts, the Commission works tirelessly to ensure that everyone has the right to a nationality and the opportunities that come with it.

What Is Statelessness?

Statelessness occurs when an individual is not recognized as a citizen of any country under national laws. This lack of legal identity leaves millions worldwide vulnerable and unable to access basic rights, such as:

  • Education
  • Employment
  • Healthcare
  • Freedom of movement

In Nigeria, statelessness affects diverse populations, including children of unknown parentage, undocumented migrants, and cross-border communities.

NCFRMI’s Efforts to End Statelessness

Advocacy for Legal Identity: Working with government agencies and international partners to advocate for policies that recognize and protect stateless individuals.

Birth Registration Campaigns: Promoting universal birth registration to prevent statelessness among children and ensure access to legal documentation.

Legislative Reforms: Supporting the review and amendment of nationality laws to close legal gaps that may lead to statelessness.

Documentation Support: Assisting individuals in obtaining vital documents, such as birth certificates and national identity cards, to secure their legal identity.

Awareness and Education: Conducting community outreach programs to educate people about the importance of nationality and how to address statelessness.

Collaboration with Stakeholders: Partnering with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), civil society organizations, and regional bodies to align efforts with the Global Action Plan to End Statelessness by 2024.

Impact of Statelessness on Individuals and Communities

Stateless individuals often face:

  • Marginalization and exclusion from society.
  • Limited access to public services and job opportunities.
  • Increased vulnerability to exploitation and abuse.

NCFRMI is committed to addressing these challenges by advocating for inclusion and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Our Commitment

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) is dedicated to eliminating statelessness in Nigeria. Through advocacy, policy reform, and direct intervention, the Commission strives to protect the rights of stateless individuals and ensure that they have a place to call home.

Together, we can build a future where every individual has a nationality and the dignity that comes with it.
