NCFRMI Calls for Urgent Intervention in the Repatriation of Nigerian Refugees

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has called for immediate Federal Government intervention in the voluntary repatriation of Nigerian refugees stranded in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. This urgent appeal was made during an inter-agency meeting held on February 26, 2025, at Refugees House, NCFRMI.

During the meeting, the Honourable Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI highlighted a formal petition from Nigerian refugees in Cameroon, who expressed concerns about being abandoned. A recent assessment confirmed the severity of their situation, prompting the Commissioner to stress the need for immediate action.

“We must intervene now,” he urged.

Currently, over 53,000 Nigerians remain stranded in Cameroon, with 7,000 designated for repatriation under the existing plan. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of ensuring that returning refugees receive adequate shelter, food, sanitation, security, and other essential support upon arrival.

The meeting brought together key government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance, and the Nigerian Immigration Service, to discuss critical aspects of the repatriation effort, including budget, security, and logistics.

NCFRMI remains steadfast in its commitment to facilitating a smooth and dignified repatriation process, ensuring that every returning refugee is supported as they reintegrate into their home communities.
